Ongoing research seeks to confirm three different links between periodontal disease and systemic disease. The first is that a systemic disease, such as diabetes, causes periodontal disease. The second is that periodontal disease increases the risk for a systemic disease, such as heart disease and stroke. The third is that a person with diabetes who controls sugar intake can control periodontal disease and vice-versa.
